2017 Apr 20

Abigail Wisniewski of Withee, Wis. and five other Concordia students earned awards for their journalism work at the Nebraska Collegiate Media Association (NCMA) Spring Conference and Golden Leaf Award Ceremony hosted by Concordia on April 8, 2017.

The Sower, the student-run newspaper at Concordia, won 10 awards at the event. The awards were presented in three divisions of Digital Medium, Newspaper and Best in Overall Experience.

"To win 10 awards at our first NCMA Conference was an incredible accomplishment, and a testament to both the individual and team effort that goes into The Sower and CUNESower.com," said Ellen Beck, adviser. "Sower students are always focused on doing the highest-quality journalism and this recognition is well-deserved and will motivate everyone to even greater achievements as we head into the next school year."

Benjamin Middendorf and Abigail Wisniewski won first place for their piece "Five Freshmen Concordia Football Players Involved in Rollover Crash." Dana Simpkin also took home a first place award for her Digital Feature Story, "A History of Hauntings at Concordia." Additionally, Carolina VonKampen won first place in the Digital Design category for her Free Movie Night Instagram post.

Kim Sleeper was given a second place award for her crowdsourcing project and Jordyn Sturms was awarded third place in the Digital Feature Story division for her piece, "Professor Don Robson Redefines Drawing IV Course."

The competition included student journalists from Concordia University, Doane University, Hastings College, Chadron State College, Wayne State College and Peru State College.
