2018 Mar 12

Josiah Schultz from Bay City, Mich. and the University Wind Ensemble of Concordia University, Nebraska, will perform its spring concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 25 at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward, Nebraska.

The Wind Ensemble will be playing the concert following their tour around Nebraska. The program includes "Tis A Gift" (based on the Shaker song "Simple Gifts") by Anne McGinty, a stirring setting of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" by Steve Rouse, David Holsinger's setting of the spiritual "Were You There" in a piece titled "On An American Spiritual" and John Philip Sousa's "The Thunderer." The program will also include music by Percy Grainger, Frank Ticheli, Alfred Reed and James Swearingen.

"The Univerisity Wind Ensemble has gained a reputation for engaging and entertaining performances of outstanding sacred and traditional concert band literature," said Andrew Schultz, conductor of the Wind Ensemble. "Throughout the long history of the band program at Concordia, the concert bands have toured extensively throughout the United States. The primary goal of the band tours is to serve as ambassadors for Concordia Univeristy by sharing the Gospel message of Jesus Christ through music."

The University Symphonic Band was formed in 1906 and is the oldest continuing musical organization at Concordia. The ensemble places emphasis on sacred, multicultural and contemporary literature, as well as traditional concert band repertoire. The tour locations include St. Paul Lutheran Church in St. Joseph, Mo., Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Bellevue, Neb., and St. John Lutheran Church in Seward, Neb.
