Katie Funk finds success at NFA Nationals

2017 Apr 20

Katie Funk of Clearwater, NE and Concordia University, Nebraska's Speech Team finished ninth at the National Forensic Association Championship held at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, on April 13-17, 2017.

The team earned a top ten individual events sweepstakes overall for Division III schools competing against speakers from 77 other colleges and universities from around the country who qualified to participate in the tournament.

"This was a great result for our team, especially with nearly all of the students attending from Concordia being first year college competitors," said Andrew Moffitt, director of forensics. "This is a validation of our freshman team core, and the team is excited to continue to grow and develop as we move forward into a big year next year."

The team sweepstakes award is a cumulative award for the efforts of all students on a team. Additionally, several Concordia students, including senior Musa Fofana and sophomore Melody Niemoth, placed in the top 75 in the nation in their events.

The Concordia speech team previously placed as the top Division III program in Nebraska and among the top 10 Christian speech programs in the nation at last month's National Christian College Forensics Championship, along with numerous achievements from its individual members.

Preparation is already underway for next academic year with the first tournament of the season scheduled for September 15-17 at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas.
