Ryan Gross to perform spring concert with University Symphonic Band

2017 Apr 6

Ryan Gross and the University Symphonic Band of Concordia University, Nebraska, will perform its spring concert at 7 p.m. on April 11, 2017, at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward, Nebraska.

The concert is based on music that is linked with stories. The first half of the program is a four-movement work titled "The Divine Comedy" by Robert W. Smith, based on Dante Alighieri's literacy classic of the same name. The four movements are titled "The Inferno," "Purgatorio," "The Ascension" and "Paradiso."

The music for the second half of the program is music from well-known story lines that have been made into major Hollywood films. The band will be performing music from the "The Wizard of Oz," "Aladdin" and "Pocahontas."

"In all of the music for this concert, the music presents an opportunity to connect with a story line," said Andrew Schultz, conductor of the Symphonic Band. "We think that from an audience perspective, this concert should be an interesting and enjoyable musical journey into each of the stories represented."

The University Symphonic Band was formed in 1906 and is the oldest continuing musical organization at Concordia. The ensemble places emphasis on sacred, multicultural and contemporary literature, as well as traditional concert band repertoire.
