Shannon O'Brien leads Vespers in Concordia's Cantamus Women's Choir

2017 Oct 27

Shannon O'Brien of Winona, Minn. and the Cantamus Women's Choir from Concordia University, Nebraska, debuted their inaugural season with a performance at 7 p.m. on Sunday Nov. 5 at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward, Neb.

The newly auditioned ensemble consists of 52 students representing a wide range of academic disciplines. Previously, Concordia has had a women's choir on campus, but the Music Department determined that the group was large enough to be formed into two.

"This quiet meditative service will follow the traditional order of Vespers, including Psalms, Scripture readings, congregational singing, and, of course, choral music," said Dr. Jeffrey Blersch, director of the Cantamus Choir.

The program includes pieces such as, "Cantate Domino," a setting of Psalm 149, "Song for Athene" by John Tavener, and "One Thing I Have Desired" by Concordia's own David von Kampen among others.
