"Voice of Bulldog athletics" Mike Meyer receives Honorary Bulldog Award
Seward, NE (10/06/2025) — During Homecoming weekend, the Concordia Alumni Association honors alumni and friends for their outstanding service and accomplishments. The Honorary Bulldog Award is presented to friends of Concordia Nebraska who have demonstrated faithful and significant support of the university through contributions of time, talent and treasure.
Many Concordia University, Nebraska Bulldogs might not recognize Michael Meyer's name, but his voice is unmistakable. The voice of Bulldog athletics, Meyer has extensive experience in broadcast journalism. He has a bachelor of arts in broadcast journalism from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and previously served at KSRD/KZKX Radio in Seward announcing news and weather, broadcasting sports events and producing commercials. He has also served as a forensic video and audio analyst for the Nebraska State Patrol, producing video and audio for training and public information, working as a public information assistant and videographer. He previously worked as a part-time literacy teacher's aid at St. John Lutheran School in Seward, working with first, third and fifth grade students. Since 1980, he has enjoyed broadcast and public address (PA) announcing for high school and college sports including football, basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball for KAWL/KTMX/KOOL Radio in York, Nebraska and for Concordia Nebraska.
Meyer is a charter member of the Law Enforcement and Emergency Services Video Association International, Inc. (LEVA), and member and choir member of St. John Lutheran Church in Seward. He is currently a Stephen Minister for the church and has served on the youth board, school board, evangelism board and board of elders at the church. He is a current member of Seward Kiwanis Club and serves as master of ceremonies for St. John Lutheran School's annual trivia night and the annual Seward ag banquet. He is a former member of Seward Jaycees. Mike is on the event staff at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln and assists Volzke Funeral Home in Seward.
He and his wife Rhonda M. Meyer have two children. Son Kellen Meyer and his wife Michelle have four children: Kinslee (15), Emalyn (12), Reese (9) and Hayes (7). Daughter Jayne Kapperman and her husband Keith have two children: Samantha (2) and a son due in August.
"Family roots are deep at Concordia Nebraska. My parents, Delbert '52 and Ann '54, met here in the 1950's. Dad sang in A Cappella and played basketball, where he was an Omaha World-Herald all-conference selection in 1952," he said. "Several uncles, aunts, cousins and a sister-in-law are Concordia Nebraska alums, and an uncle Art Fliege was band director for several years."
Meyer said Seward feels like home.
"Dad went to heaven in February of 2024, and mom lives in Seward. My wife of 45 years, Rhonda, is a registered nurse. We're blessed to have our children and grandchildren close by," he said. "Our son and his wife own Plum Creek Seed Services in Seward, and have four children, three girls and a boy. Our daughter and her husband live on an acreage near Firth, Nebraska. She's a dietician at the VA in Lincoln, and he's a builder. I have a brother, Philip, who lives in Hudson, Illinois, with his wife and two sons, and a sister, Lisa, who is with the Lord. I love anything to do with my grandchildrentheir school functions and activities and sports events. I'm an avid golfer - some people think I live at the course - and I enjoy jet skiing, am interested in aviation and love traveling with my wife."
Meyer and his wife recently took a "bucket list" Holy Land trip with Concordia Nebraska's Dr. Mark Meehl, which Meyer said was an unforgettable experience.
"Concordia University, Nebraska has been a big part of my life, even though I didn't attend here," he said. "As a child of Concordia alums and Lutheran educators growing up in York, Nebraska, I was able to come to Seward often for various Concordia events, including football games, the annual talent festival for elementary school students, choir concerts and band concerts. Living in Seward since 1979 has blessed me with countless opportunities to be involved with Concordia University, Nebraska. They include recording narrations, 15 years videotaping Concordia football games, 10 years webcasting Concordia softball, and public address announcing and play-by-play broadcasting for football, baseball, volleyball and basketball games."
Meyer is currently the PA announcer for men's and women's basketball, a position he has held for nearly 15 years. He served as master of ceremonies for Concordia Nebraska's "Imagine The Mission" banquet in 2005 and the "90 Years of Bulldog Football" reunion banquet in 2016. He is a member of the Concordia Athletics Hall of Fame Selection Committee and received the Concordia University Lifetime Service Award in 2011.
"My involvement with Concordia University has been a huge blessing to me, and I'm very thankful for the opportunities God has given me!" he said.
