Concordia Nebraska announces new Micah Pre-Health Scholars learning community
Seward, NE (09/10/2024) — Concordia University, Nebraska today announced the formation of the university's new Micah Pre-Health Scholars learning community, which is designed to support students interested in healthcare careers through hands-on experiences working in healthcare, close relationships with professors, practicing health professionals and peers who share their interests and graduate or professional school preparation.
The program is expected to launch in fall 2025. Rooted in Lutheran Christian values and ethics, Micah Scholars encourages a service-minded approach to healthcare vocations. The university plans to admit five students to the program in its inaugural year with the goal of eventually adding about 15 students per cohort each year.
"In the Bible, the prophet Micah called God's people to do justice, love mercy and humbly follow the Lord," said Micah Scholars Program Director Dr. Teddie Genter. "Concordia Nebraska's Micah Scholars have heard the prophet's call. The Lord has given them a heart for service and a head for science and a desire to use these gifts in healthcare to demonstrate the mercy of God in service to others."
Micah Scholars meet throughout the academic year to exercise the gifts the Lord has given them as they prepare for service in the healthcare vocations. This includes participation in on- and off-campus experiences including volunteering together in healthcare vocations, rigorous study halls to promote success in the most challenging pre-health courses, guest presentations and lectures focused on the health sciences and healthcare facility tours.
"The unique, personal academic community of Micah Pre-Health Scholars fosters a supportive learning environment where students engage actively with mentors in healthcare," said Genter. "They receive support preparing for graduate or professional school and form close relationships with professors, practicing health professionals, and peers who share their interests. This program is rooted in Christian values and ethics so students can integrate spiritual and moral perspectives into their professional development. Simply put, it encourages a service-minded, Christ-like approach to healthcare."
