Lighthouse Club hosts survivor education night, to hold Threads pop-up thrift store
Seward, NE (03/28/2025) — Concordia Nebraska's Lighthouse Club is its on-campus chapter of the International Justice Mission (IJM), an organization dedicated to educating others about modern human trafficking and raising funds to support the fight against it. This semester, the Lighthouse Club hosted a survivor education story night and plans to open a pop-up thrift store filled with student donations for two days in April.
Senior Greta Corneliusen is the Lighthouse Club's current president. She said that the survivor education night, which took place on March 26, sought to connect students to real-life stories of survivors.
"I think it's important to have stories shared so that we can connect in our heads that these problems are real and not just made up," she said. "Seeing these stories come to light makes our mission even stronger." The night consisted of viewing relevant videos and faciliating group discussions among attendees.
The Lighthouse Club holds a wide variety of events and takes part in outreach throughout each semester. Two other major initiatives that the club sponsors annually are the month-long "Dressember" fundraiser, which also takes place across the country and the "Buy Flowers, Not Girls" flower sale for Valentine's Day.
The clothing industry is another focus of the group - as "fast fashion," the mass production of cheaply made trendy clothing, continues to attract millions of customers across the globe, the Lighthouse Club plans to respond by holding a two-day pop-up thrift store that they call "Threads."
"Threads" will be on campus April 25-26 selling clothing donated from Concordia Nebraska students to raise money for the fight against human trafficking. Corneliusen said that "all money raised through Threaads will be donated directly to IJM, where it will in turn be used to change laws, advocate for justice and bring people to freedom around the world."
"The Threads shop will not only illuminate the dangers of the fast fashion industry and the world of human trafficking but it will help raise money directly to fight against the industry through the IJM," she said. "The Threads shop encourages people to shop secondhand and use their old clothes for good!"
Donation boxes are located in the David Dorm and the Thom Education and Leadership Center. The boxes will be available for student donations through the Easter holiday and the Threads sale will take place in Janzow Plaza.
