Marxhausen Gallery exhibit highlights women artists

Seward, NE (01/31/2020) — Concordia University, Nebraska's Marxhausen Gallery of Art will host the exhibit, "all this and not ordinary (the difference is spreading): An Exhibition of Women's Studio Practice" Feb. 23 through March 26.

An opening reception will be held Sunday, Feb. 23, from 1 to 4 p.m., in the Marxhausen Gallery, located in Concordia's Jesse Hall, with a panel discussion in the Thom Leadership Education Center auditorium at 2 p.m.

Comprised of six women working in various mediums, the show highlights a broad range of media that includes fiber, printmaking, sculptural paintings, film performance and sound poetry. Artists Meg Lipke, Mary Hickman, Caroline Kent, Kristen Martincic, Heidi Wiren Bartlett and Wendy Weiss represent a cross-generational community of practicing artists. In addition to themes of water and light, references to the human body are significant throughout this exhibition.

"Be it delicately printed bathing suits, 100 feet of handwoven intestines or filming the body as it carries out simple routines, these artists satisfy their curiosity and imagination through material substance, symbol, psychological narrative and personal iconography," said James Bockelman, Concordia professor of art and director of the Marxhausen Gallery. "Indebted to Gertrude Stein, 'all this and not ordinary' seeks to remind visitors that we make our way in a world of difference, richly patterned and profoundly abundant. "

The exhibit is open to the public and free of charge. The Marxhausen Gallery is located in Jesse Hall and is open Monday-Friday 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday 1 to 4 p.m., while classes are in session. The gallery is closed March 7 through March 15 for spring recess.
