Graduating seniors recognized for academic achievements at 2025 Commencement Honors Dinner

Concordia University, Nebraska recently honored 27 graduating seniors who maintained high levels of academic excellence during their time at the university at the 2025 Commencement Honors Dinner on May 9. Each year, academic departments may confer two or more awards, depending on the department's size and the number of students in a particular program. Each department may determine the basis for students' attainment of these awards; however, they must consider the student's grade point average, service to the department and service to the university.

Natural Science department students receive 2025 awards

Concordia University, Nebraska's natural sciences department recently held its annual banquet, recognizing graduating seniors and students who have displayed outstanding service and scholarship during their time at the university. Students and faculty enjoyed each other's company, fellowship, prayer and the game, "Are you smarter than a middle schooler?" The banquet featured a presentation from Josiah Rensner '19, who majored in education, chemistry and biology during his time at Concordia. Resner is currently completing his Ph.D. in chemistry at Iowa State University.

Outstanding Student Award

Concordia University, Nebraska honored graduating seniors who exhibited outstanding academic success during their time at the university during its annual Commencement Honors Dinner on May 3. Each year, academic departments may confer two or more awards, depending on the department's size and the number of students in a particular program. The basis for students' attainment of these awards is determined by each department; however, they must consider students' grade point averages, service to Concordia and service to the department.

Science Department Students Receive 2024 Honors

Concordia University, Nebraska's natural sciences department recently held its annual banquet recognizing graduating seniors from the department and select students for their outstanding service and scholarship. Students and faculty enjoyed each other's company, fellowship, prayer and the game, "Are you smarter than a middle schooler?" The banquet featured a presentation from Concordia Nebraska physics professor Dr. Robert Hermann highlighting the 2024 American total eclipse and a trip that he co-led with physics professor Dr. Brent Royuk to bring Concordia undergraduate students to Southern Missouri and into the path of totality. Ultimately successful, the memorable trip became a legitimate "star trek" as unforeseen traffic difficulties plagued the venture.

Concordia's Programming Team Welcomes New Members

Concordia's programming team likes to solve problems, in one way or another. This year, they're coming back ready to work with a team of eight returners and an additional five new freshman. The team is coached by Marcus Gubanyi, assistant professor of computer science, chair of the mathematics and computer science department, and assistant coached by Ian Kollipara, Concordia alumnus.

Accounting Students Awarded 2023 Scholarships

Recently, the Foundation of the Nebraska Society of CPAs awarded five Concordia accounting students scholarships. The scholarships are awarded to accounting majors with high GPAs who are on a CPA track, and who are planning to practice accounting in Nebraska once they graduate.

Outstanding Academic Achievement

Concordia University, Nebraska honored graduating seniors who achieved outstanding academic accomplishments during their college career at its Commencement Honors Dinner on May 5. Every year, each academic department may give two or more awards, depending on the size of the department and the number of students in the program. Each department establishes its own criteria for determining award recipients, but the criteria must, at minimum, consider the student's grade-point average, level of service to the department and level of service to Concordia.

Students Present at 2023 Academic and Research Symposium

On April 24th, Concordia University, Nebraska hosted its 12th annual academic research symposium. A total of 58 students gave 28 poster and 37 oral presentations. Students presented on a wide variety of topics, from migration patterns of snow geese to a summary of a science fiction novel.

Poppe Inducted Into Criminal Justice Honor Society

Elayne Poppe, a junior from Lincoln, Nebraska, was recently inducted into Alpha Phi Sigma, the only national criminal justice honor society. In order to be inducted, students must complete the equivalent of three full-time semesters of course work, complete four criminal justice courses, major or minor in criminal justice or a related field, carry a 3.2 cumulative GPA and a 3.2 or higher within the criminal justice major or minor and be recommended by a faculty advisor. Dr. Kathy Miller, professor of sociology, and Dr. Ed Hoffman, associate professor of criminal justice and director of the online criminal justice program, serve as faculty advisors of the Concordia chapter. "Elayne is an excellent student and kind person. She is always prepared and always treats others with respect. She is very deserving of this honor," Hoffman said of Poppe.

Concordia University, Nebraska announced its May 2019 undergraduates who graduated with distinction or high distinction honors based on their academic achievements at Concordia Nebraska. The top 10 percent of students in each college have graduated with high distinction, and the next 15 percent in each college have graduated with distinction. A student must also have completed at least 64 credit hours at Concordia Nebraska to be eligible for graduation honors.
